La Forza Della Terra is dedicated to the
earthquake that struck Friuli between May and September 1976. The event claimed
990 lives, displaced 100,000 people and destroyed 18,000 buildings, while
damaging a further 75,000. The project aims to provide access to the wide range
of information, documentation and scientific research produced and collected by
institutions, associations and private individuals over the past fifty years.
As well as covering the earthquake and its effects, it chronicles the reconstruction
of Friuli, which is one of the most exemplary cases of a population overcoming
adversity with the help of many people from Italy and abroad. Created by the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia and the University of Udine, the La
Forza Della Terra portal promotes awareness and preserves the memory of one of
the most challenging periods in the modern history of Friuli and Italy.
